In 1998, Yu won the Asian Philip Morris Excellent Work Award, and in 1999, her works were included in the Young Contemporary Artist. Yu's paintings straddle between figurative and abstract. In the concept of creation, both "form" and "content" are emphasized. In the face of post-modern influences, there have been divergent art theories and the widespread use of composite medium and media. Yu chooses "painting" as a two-dimensional space (plane), adopts semi-figurative shapes, and expresses a space with one colour through the association of colours and the perspective of different viewpoints. In the exploration of "form", Yu use colour and space to express. And Yu prefer to use strong monochromatic colour to describe the space and the subject, which can be seen from many of her works. At the same time, in terms of technique, Yu also use flat paint, colour blocks and changing textures to express the style of the subject. Yu like to use symbols that are familiar, easily recognized, animals, flowers and plants, children, to allow people to feel their innate characteristics, while expressing hope, value, preciousness and fragility of life.
